Can acne scars be prevented?

Largely, yes, and the method is unglamorous: treat active acne before it scars. Pitting scars form when inflamed breakouts damage the skin's collagen deeply enough that it heals indented, and once that happens the mark is permanent by default. Active acne is treatable; established scars are only improvable. Timing is the entire difference between the two.

How a breakout becomes a scar

Not every pimple threatens a scar. The dangerous ones are the deep, inflamed, long-lived lesions, where inflammation sits in the skin long enough to destroy collagen at depth. When the breakout finally clears, the skin repairs the crater with less tissue than it lost, leaving an atrophic scar: the icepick, boxcar, and rolling textures that make-up sits in rather than covers.

The equation is uncomfortable but clarifying: every week an inflamed breakout cycle continues is another roll of the dice on permanent texture. Scar prevention is not a product; it is shortening the time your skin spends inflamed.

Treat the fire before repaving the road

This is why active acne gets treated first, always, even for clients who arrive most bothered by their existing scars. Working on scars while breakouts continue is repaving a road that is still being dug up: new lesions keep creating new damage behind the repair. Aerolase laser acne treatment clears the active cycle and helps prevent the permanent pitting; once the skin is quiet, laser scar treatment can remodel what earlier years left behind.

The two treatments share a machine and a philosophy but do different jobs, one protective, one corrective. Sequenced properly, the protective one shrinks the workload of the corrective one for good.

The advantage of acting early

Because sessions are comfortable and carry no downtime, there is no practical reason to wait out a breakout cycle hoping it resolves before damage accrues. The earlier the cycle is interrupted, the less scar territory ever forms, and the less future correction the skin will ever need. In scar terms, the cheapest treatment is the one that made the scar unnecessary.

Common questions

I already have scars. Is it too late?

No. Established scars respond to laser remodeling, which gradually softens texture and evens tone. But if you also have active acne, that gets treated first, so new scars stop forming behind the repair work.

What makes a breakout more likely to scar?

Depth, inflammation, and duration. Deep, angry, long-lasting lesions damage collagen far more than surface congestion, and skin that scarred before is signaling how it heals.

Can acne treatment and scar treatment run at the same time?

The sequencing is decided per face, but the principle holds: quiet the active cycle first or in parallel where appropriate, then remodel. Marie designs the order at consultation.
