Lip contouring vs. lip filler: what is the difference?

Lip filler describes a product; lip contouring describes a design philosophy. Filler adds volume wherever it is placed. Contouring uses that same product to define the lip border, refine shape, and balance proportion, adding volume only where the design calls for it. The overfilled look happens when volume leads; the natural look happens when definition does.
Definition does the work
Most of what reads as a beautiful lip is not size. It is the crispness of the vermilion border, the line where lip meets skin, the proportion between upper and lower lip, and how the shape sits against the rest of the face. Marie's technique focuses on exactly that: shape and border definition first, with harmony and proportion as the governing rules, enhancing the lip you have rather than replacing it.
That is why the result is described as soft, kissable definition that still looks like you. A contoured lip photographs like a good version of your own mouth; an overfilled lip photographs like a procedure.
Where volume fits
Volume still has a role, and the product doing the work is a hyaluronic acid dermal filler, a soft gel based on a molecule your skin already contains, with the notable property of being dissolvable if ever needed. In a contouring approach the volume is subtle and structural: supporting the border, evening asymmetry, restoring what thinned with age. The quantity serves the design rather than being the point.
Avoiding the overfilled look
The overfilled lip is almost always a proportion failure: volume added faster than the border and shape could carry it. The protection against it is conservative, design-led work, building across visits if more is wanted rather than front-loading. It is far easier to add thoughtfully than to walk back an overcorrection, even with a dissolvable product.
Common questions
Will my lips still look like mine?
That is the explicit goal. The technique enhances your natural lip shape rather than imposing a template, and results are balanced to your features. The best outcomes read as your lips on their best day. See how upper lip definition affects the philtrum.
Is lip contouring reversible?
Hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved with hyaluronidase if ever necessary, which is one of the reasons they are the standard for lip work. Whether and when that would apply to you is a consultation conversation.
How much should I start with?
Conservatively. A design-led first session establishes shape and definition, and volume can build across later visits if you want more. Starting restrained protects proportion, which is the thing that makes lips look natural. Read why filler migration happens.
