Can lip filler shorten your philtrum?

No. Hyaluronic acid filler does not remove or shorten the skin between the nose and upper lip. Careful upper lip contouring can define and slightly evert the lip border so that the space looks shorter, while its physical length stays the same.

What changes with age?

The philtrum is the grooved area between the nose and upper lip. A study of 169 women aged 20 to 60 found that the skin portion of the upper lip became taller with age while the visible pink lip became shorter. The study measured appearance across age groups; it did not test filler as a treatment.

How can contouring change its appearance?

Marie Jin plans the upper lip in relation to the nose, cupid’s bow, and chin. Defining the upper border can draw attention upward without adding volume throughout the mouth. This is an optical change, and the amount of change depends on your starting anatomy.

A surgical lip lift is a different procedure: it removes skin beneath the nose to physically shorten the distance. Lip contouring is temporary and adjustable. See how contouring differs from volume-focused filler.

Who might consider it?

Someone whose upper lip has thinned, or who wants definition without a larger lip, may want to discuss this approach. Prior filler can affect the plan, especially if it has spread beyond the lip border. Read why filler migration happens and bring your treatment history to the consultation.

Common questions

Will the result look like a lip lift?

No. A lip lift removes skin. Contouring can make the area look shorter, but cannot change its physical length.

Is the visual change permanent?

No. Hyaluronic acid filler is temporary and can be dissolved when clinically appropriate.

Can I do this if I have had filler before?

Often, yes. Marie first assesses the existing filler, lip shape, and your treatment history.
