Why does lip filler migrate?

Lip filler migration means product has spread beyond its intended position. Injection depth and direction, product properties, the amount used, and individual lip anatomy can all influence that spread. The lips also move constantly, although movement alone does not prove why a particular filler migrated.

What affects where filler settles?

A high-frequency ultrasound study of 126 people found that vertical injection techniques were associated with deeper deposits and signs of migration. A separate study of 216 patients compared injection directions and found differences in upper lip migration. Both inform technique, but neither can predict the outcome of an individual injection.

Marie Jin uses conservative amounts and assesses where existing product sits before adding more. The shape and border matter as much as volume. For the design approach, read lip contouring vs. lip filler.

What might migration look like?

Fullness above the upper lip line, a blurred cupid’s bow, or a persistent ridge beyond the lip border can raise concern. Early swelling may look similar, so appearance immediately after an injection is not enough to diagnose migration. If fullness persists after healing, ask a qualified injector to assess it.

What happens if filler has moved?

Hyaluronic acid filler can often be dissolved with hyaluronidase. The right plan depends on product history, examination, and the result you want. Marie may recommend dissolving before any new contouring. If you want upper lip definition without overall fullness, see how contouring affects the philtrum’s appearance.

Common questions

Does lip filler always migrate?

No. Migration is a risk, not an inevitable result. Careful planning can reduce the risk, but no injector can guarantee it will never happen.

Is lip contouring less likely to migrate?

Contouring may use a smaller amount and a different placement pattern, but it still uses filler. Individual risk is assessed at consultation.

Can Marie assess filler placed elsewhere?

Yes. Bring any information you have about the product, treatment dates, and previous injections.
